Manage Data Sources

This topic explains how to export and import instances using the SourceConnect Management Console.

Export Data Source

Use the Export option to export and customize a data source instance for use during an upgrade. For example, this option can be used to migrate an instance from one environment to another.

  1. Select the Export action for the required instance in Data Sources.

  2. Enter the desired name for the exported file.
  3. Select the export type from the drop-down menu:
    • Default – Use this option to export all default and custom objects associated with the instance.
    • Custom – Use this option to export selective source and ETL objects.

  4. If you select the Custom option, all objects associated with the instance are displayed. Select the modified default and custom objects you want to export.

  5. Click Export. The exported template .sc file is downloaded in the browser.

Note: When syncing custom objects, which requires a version upgrade to load the data, the export function will include all relevant versions.

Import Data Source

Use the Import option to import a new or customized data source instance. For example, this option can be used to upgrade an instance.

  1. In Data Sources, click Create and then select Import Data Source.

  2. Select the import type from the drop-down menu:
    • Default – Use this option to import all objects associated with the instance.
    • Custom – Use this option to import selected source and ETL objects that were exported and modified.
  3. In the Data Source field, select the required file to import.

  4. Click Import.

Note: Custom import updates the instance version as it updates the instance to include the selected or custom objects. This action retains the staging and connection details.

Note: You can perform export and import operations for the staging area using the same steps in the Staging Area module. The custom export and import options allow you to select modified stage objects.

Migrate between Environments

You can transfer changes from a lower environment to a higher environment for further use. The following steps outline the complete process. For detailed information on each step, refer to the respective sections.

  1. Create a data source.
  2. Sync changes made to database objects using either the default or custom sync function.
  3. Export the data source using the default export function to replicate the lower environment.
  4. Import the downloaded file using the default import function to establish the higher environment.
  5. Sync further changes made to the database and update the data source using the sync functionality.
  6. Export only modified objects using the custom export function.
  7. Import the custom changes using the custom import function.
  8. Review the higher environment to ensure the custom changes are reflected.

Note: Directly synchronizing database changes in higher environments is not recommended due to potential environment mismatches. Instead, make the changes in the development environment and propagate them to higher environments using export and import processes.
